Harrisonburg, Virginia – TSSi is slated to host the second event in their “Lunch and Learn” class series, “Firearms Instructor as a First Responder” on Tuesday, November 8, 2016. This course is designed to prepare firearms instructors for potential injuries that occur during police officer training. Injuries during training can occur to new officers in the training academy, as well as veteran officers doing in-service training (International Association of Police Chiefs).

This course provides the firearms instructor basic knowledge of the top statistical injuries that occur: penetrating wounds (shrapnel/ballistics), eye injuries, toxic insect bites/stings, and sudden-unexpected cardiac arrest (IAPC & Bureau of Labor Statistics).  Sudden cardiac arrest is the second leading cause of line of duty death in police officers -- traffic crashes account for the highest (International Association of Police Chiefs). The source of this program content is the internationally recognized Tactical Combat Casualty Care (TCCC), Tactical Emergency Casualty Care (TECC), and American Heart Association-Guidelines for Emergency Cardiac Care (ECC).

The “Firearms Instructor as a First Responder” course format opens with a 1-hour lecture on range related injuries, emergency care and considerations, equipment used, and then transitions to hands on stations where tourniquet skills, wound packing, chest injury management, and other life-saving skills are explained, demonstrated, and then practiced by participants.  The course wraps up with a summary, followed by a question and answer session.  Lunch is provided as a means for networking, sharing of information and feedback.

There is no charge for “Lunch and Learn” classes hosted by TSSi. These classes are intended to extend support to the local law enforcement and first responder community by providing a free educational and networking service to our customers so that they can be better prepared to protect and serve our communities.
